What is flexible jaw coupling?

It is a mechanical device that connects two rotating shafts. It consists of three main components:

  1. Two Aluminum or Steel Hubs: Each hub attaches to a shaft (e.g., a motor shaft and a pump shaft). Each hub has several “jaws” or lobes protruding from it.

  2. An Elastomeric “Spider”: This is a flexible, star-shaped insert made of a material like NBR (Nitrile Rubber), Polyurethane, or Hytrel. It fits snugly between the jaws of the two hubs.

The spider is the heart of the coupling, providing all its flexibility and damping properties.

How It Works & Key Features

FeatureHow it Works & Why it Matters
Torque TransmissionTorque is transmitted from the first hub’s jaws, through the spider, to the second hub’s jaws.
Misalignment CompensationThe flexibility of the spider allows it to compress and deform, accommodating angularparallel, and axial misalignment between the two shafts.
Vibration Damping & Shock AbsorptionThe elastomeric spider absorbs vibrations and softens shock loads from one shaft, preventing them from being transmitted to the other. This protects motors, bearings, and driven equipment.
Electrical InsulationThe non-metallic spider electrically isolates the two shafts, preventing the flow of stray electrical currents that can damage bearings.
Maintenance-Free & No LubricationJaw couplings do not require any lubrication, making them a “fit-and-forget” component in many applications.
BacklashStandard jaw couplings have a small amount of backlash (slight free movement) due to the clearances needed for the spider to function. Zero-backlash designs are available for precise applications.

Advantages vs. Disadvantages

AdvantagesDisadvantages
✔ Excellent Vibration Damping❌ Not True Zero-Backlash (standard types)
✔ No Lubrication Needed❌ Spider Wears Over Time and Requires Replacement
✔ Good Misalignment Capacity❌ Limited High-Temperature Capability (depends on spider material)
✔ Easy to Install & Maintain❌ Not Ideal for Ultra-High-Precision Servos
✔ Cost-Effective

Common Applications

Jaw couplings are the go-to solution for a vast range of general industrial applications, including:

  • Pump Systems (The most common application)

  • Compressors and Fans

  • Conveyor Systems

  • Agitators and Mixers

  • General Machine Tools

In summary, a Flexible Jaw Coupling is a simple, robust, and cost-effective solution for connecting shafts in equipment where misalignment, vibration, and shock loads are primary concerns. Its replaceable spider makes maintenance quick and easy, minimizing downtime.
