G (Single) vs GD (Double) – Which One Do You Need?

FeatureG Type (Single Joint)GD Type (Double Joint)
Angular misalignment✅ Up to 45°✅ Up to 45° per joint
Parallel offset❌ No✅ Yes
Total articulationUp to 45°Up to 90°
LengthShorterLonger
Best forShafts intersecting at an angle on the same planeShafts both angled and offset

Rule of thumb:

  • Use G type (single joint) for applications with constant angular misalignment.

  • Use GD type (double joint) for applications requiring parallel offset compensation or smoother motion at higher angles.

💡 Double joint configurations provide smoother power transmission and reduced vibration when both angular and parallel misalignment are present.

Bearing Selection – Pin/Block vs Needle Roller

The G+GD series offers two bearing options to match your speed and load requirements:

Bearing TypeMax SpeedDynamic Load CapacityBest For
Pin/Block (Sliding)1000 RPMGoodLow-speed, high-torque, shock absorption
Needle Roller4000 RPMHighHigh-speed, smooth rotation, precision applications

⚠️ Note: The torque range listed in the table is for sliding bearing. Needle roller bearing torque capacity is approximately 50% of sliding bearing rating. It is recommended to use the coupling at ≤50% of the maximum rated speed for optimal service life.

Product Structure

  1. Two Yokes (Forks) – Precision-machined from 40Cr/42CrMo alloy steel or 304/316 stainless steel.

  2. Cross Shaft (Cross Axis) – The central component that transmits torque.

  3. Pins, Bushings, and Blocks – Made of high-quality alloy steel (40Cr, 40CrNi, 20CrMo, or 20CrMnVB).

  4. Single Joint (G Type) – One pivot point for angular flexibility.

  5. Double Joint (GD Type) – Two pivot points for angular + offset flexibility.

💡 How it works: The G+GD series universal joint consists of two yokes connected by a cross-shaped central component. The pin/block or needle roller bearings allow for smooth angular movement while transmitting torque. The single joint (G) compensates for angular misalignment only, while the double joint (GD) accommodates both angular misalignment and parallel offset. The angle between shafts is allowed to change within a limited range according to working needs.

FAQ

Q: What is the difference between G type and GD type?
A: G type is a single universal joint – for angular misalignment only. GD type is a double universal joint – allows both angular misalignment and parallel offset, providing smoother motion.

Q: What is the maximum operating angle?
A: Each joint can operate up to 45° limit angle. For continuous operation with built-in bearings, we recommend ≤30°.

Q: What bearing options are available?
A: Pin/block (plain) bearing – up to 1000 RPM, higher torque capacity. Needle roller bearing – up to 4000 RPM, low friction, maintenance-free. Needle bearing torque capacity is approximately 50% of pin/block rating.

Q: What materials are available?
A: Standard is 40Cr, 40CrNi, 20CrMo, or 20CrMnVB alloy steel. We also offer 304 and 316 stainless steel for corrosion-resistant applications.
