Product Structure – Pin/Block vs Needle Bearing
Two Yokes (Forks) – Precision-machined from 42CrMo/40Cr alloy steel, quenched & tempered (HRC48-52).
Cross Shaft (Cross Axis) – Central torque-transmitting component with hardened pins (HRC56-58).
Bearing Options:
Pin/Block (Plain) Bearing – Up to 1000 RPM, direct metal-to-metal contact, higher torque capacity for given joint size
Needle Roller Bearing – Up to 4000 RPM, reduces friction, maintenance-free, ideal for high-speed applications
Single Joint (G Type) – One pivot point for angular flexibility.
Double Joint (GD Type) – Two pivot points for angular + offset flexibility.
💡 How it works: The G/GD series universal joint consists of two yokes connected by a cross-shaped central component. The pin/block design uses direct metal-to-metal contact between pins and yoke bores, providing high torque capacity . The needle bearing design uses roller bearings to reduce friction, enabling speeds up to 4000 RPM . The single joint (G) compensates for angular misalignment only, while the double joint (GD) accommodates both angular misalignment and parallel offset.
Pin/Block vs Needle Bearing – Which One Do You Need?
| Feature | Pin/Block (Plain) Bearing | Needle Roller Bearing |
|---|---|---|
| Max Speed | 1000 RPM | 4000 RPM |
| Torque Capacity | Higher for given joint size | Lower (approx. 50% of pin/block) |
| Friction | Higher – metal-to-metal contact | Lower – roller elements reduce friction |
| Sensitivity to contamination | Moderate | Higher |
| Space requirement | More compact | Larger |
| Maintenance | Requires periodic lubrication | Sealed, low maintenance |
| Best for | Low-speed, high-torque, shock loads | High-speed, smooth rotation, precision |
Recommendation:
Choose pin/block (G/GD) for heavy-duty, low-speed applications with shock loads and high torque requirements.
Choose needle bearing (GZ/GDZ) for high-speed applications (above 1000 RPM) where precision and low friction are priorities.
