How to Choose a Universal Joint for Machine Tools

How to Choose a Universal Joint for Machine Tools

Machine tools require accurate and reliable power transmission.

Choosing the correct universal joint for machine tools requires more than simply matching the shaft diameter.

The universal joint must be selected according to torque, speed, operating angle, bore type, precision, installation space, and duty cycle.

1. Check the Shaft Diameter

The first specification to determine is the shaft diameter.

Apex precision universal joints are available with standard bore sizes and can also be customized.

If the shaft uses a special interface, provide the exact dimensions or drawing.

2. Calculate the Required Torque

Torque is one of the most important parameters.

The selected universal joint should have sufficient torque capacity for the actual application.

Consider both:

  • Normal operating torque
  • Peak or impact torque

For intermittent applications, peak torque can be particularly important.

3. Check Operating Speed

Machine-tool applications can require relatively high rotational speed.

Needle-bearing configurations may be suitable for higher-speed applications.

Selected Apex configurations can operate at speeds of up to approximately 4000 RPM, depending on size and operating conditions.

4. Determine the Operating Angle

The shaft angle directly affects universal-joint performance.

A single joint is generally designed for an operating angle up to approximately 45°, depending on model.

If the machine requires a more complex shaft arrangement, a double-joint configuration may be more appropriate.

5. Select G or GD

Use G type when a single-joint arrangement is sufficient.

Use GD type when a double-joint configuration is required to accommodate more complex shaft geometry.

6. Choose the Bore Type

Machine tools may require different shaft connection methods.

Available options can include:

  • Standard round bore
  • Keyway
  • Hexagonal bore
  • Square bore
  • Spline
  • Pin hole
  • Flange
  • Customized shaft connection

7. Consider Precision

For machine-tool applications, dimensional accuracy is important.

Depending on the design, precision bore tolerance such as H7 may be specified.

The actual tolerance should be confirmed according to the required shaft and joint configuration.

8. Consider Material

For demanding machine-tool transmission applications, 42CrMo can provide high mechanical strength and durability.

Other materials may be selected according to:

  • Load
  • Corrosion
  • Weight
  • Operating environment
  • Cost
  • Customer requirements

9. Consider Installation Space

Measure:

  • Overall length
  • Shaft center distance
  • Outer diameter
  • Bore diameter
  • Flange dimensions
  • Adjacent component clearance

This helps avoid interference during installation.

10. Provide a Drawing for Custom Applications

If your machine uses a non-standard shaft interface, the fastest way to select a suitable universal joint is to provide:

  • 2D drawing
  • 3D CAD
  • Shaft dimensions
  • Photos
  • Existing sample
  • Required torque
  • Required RPM
  • Operating angle

A manufacturer can then recommend the appropriate G or GD configuration.
