How to Measure a Spider Coupling Rubber Insert Before Ordering
Introduction
Ordering the wrong coupling spider can cause installation problems, excessive vibration and premature wear.
Before purchasing a replacement, measure the existing spider and coupling carefully.
1. Identify the Coupling Model
Check whether the existing coupling is:
- GS
- GR
- MT
- HRC
- Other jaw coupling designs
If a model number is printed on the coupling, record it.
2. Measure Outside Diameter
Measure the outside diameter of the spider.
Record the dimension in millimeters.
3. Measure Thickness
Measure the thickness of the spider.
Some coupling spiders have different thickness dimensions depending on the design.
4. Count the Spider Lobes
Count the number of spider lobes.
For example:
- 4 lobes
- 6 lobes
- 8 lobes
- 10 lobes
The lobe geometry must match the coupling hubs.
5. Check Hub Dimensions
If possible, also measure:
- Hub outside diameter
- Jaw dimensions
- Shaft bore
- Coupling overall dimensions
This information helps the manufacturer identify the correct model.
6. Take Photos
A clear photograph of the complete coupling is extremely useful.
For OEM replacement, it is even better to provide:
Photo + Dimensions + Existing Sample + Model Number
